WASHINGTON (AP) _ Confronted with the one-cent increase in postage rates a few Americans have resorted to taping pennies on envelopes to cover the increased cost.

The post office would like them to stop.

Pennies can damage some automatic canceling machines, and if they fall off the envelopes they can damage other machinery, postal officials said.

There have been some spot shortages of one-cent stamps, but post offices should have plenty of new 33-cent stamps and 1-cent stamps by now.
