SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — A member of Chilean President Michelle Bachelet's family has died while piloting a helicopter on an aid mission in the northern part of the country, Chile's Air Force said Thursday.
The Bell 206 helicopter, missing since Tuesday night, was found Thursday morning and the pilot and three other people aboard were dead, the Air Force said in a statement.
Chile's presidency had confirmed that pilot Pedro Pablo Aldunate is married to Maria Isabel Bachelet, one of the president's second cousins. Local media had reported that the helicopter was flying from Copiapo to the Diego de Almagro area with drinking water for residents of a desert region recently hit by flash-floods.
Bachelet expressed her condolences Thursday and said that it's "very regrettable" because the victims were trying to help others amid a natural disaster.
The Chilean Air Force said the crash is under investigation.
