NEW YORK (AP) _ Promoter Butch Lewis, rebuffed in his effort to get Michael Spinks a fight with heavyweight champion Mike Tyson, said Thursday he will leave Dec. 9 for Rio de Janiero in an effort to get Spinks a fight with Brazilian Adilson Rodriguez.
Jimmy Jacobs and Bill Cayton, co-managers of Tyson, who is recognized as champion by the World Boxing Council, World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation, said Tyson will not fight Spinks unless Lewis is not involved in the promotion.
''I'm also going to talk with Francesco Damiani (of Italy) and Tim Witherspoon (former World Boxing Council and World Boxing Association) champion),'' said Lewis, Spinks' friend who has guided the fighter's career. ''I'm negotiating with anyone and everyone.
''Michael Spinks will be in the ring defending his title in the month of March.'' Lewis contends Spinks, the former International Boxing Federation champion, is still a champion because he did not lose the title in the ring.
Spinks was in position to fight Tyson for the undisputed championship in the final of the HBO title unification series. But Spinks withdrew from the series to fight Gerry Cooney, and was stripped of the IBF title for failing to agree to make a mandatory defense against Tony Tucker.
