PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — Police say an off-duty Port Huron officer has been fatally shot at an apartment building during a break-in.

The officer was identified as 45-year-old Lt. Joel Wood. St. Clair County Undersheriff Tom Buckley says Wood was visiting a woman early Friday when a man attacked them at her Clyde Township apartment.

The woman and a neighbor were also shot when she sought help. A suspect was arrested miles away at a gas station in suburban Detroit.

Wood was a Port Huron officer for 22 years. Chief Joseph Platzer says he was a "great officer."

Aaron Shown says he returned to the apartment building after working a late shift and found the driveway marked with crime scene tape. He says, "This kind of stuff doesn't happen out here."
