CLEVELAND (AP) _ Chasity Melvin scored 19 points to lead the Cleveland Rockers to a 72-55 victory over the winless Detroit Shock on Thursday night.

Penny Taylor added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Rockers (1-1), who outscored the Shock 29-4 during an 11:14 span to turn a 17-16 deficit into a 45-21 lead.

Melvin scored eight points on a variety of inside moves, and Taylor had five points during a 15-0 run to open the second half against Detroit, which went scoreless the first 6:15 of the half until Swin Cash hit two free throws.

Wendy Palmer scored 15 points to lead Detroit (0-5), which missed its first 11 shots from the field in the second half until Lenae Williams sank a 3-pointer with 10:57 to play to make it 52-28.

Cash scored 12, but the second pick in April's WNBA draft shot just 3-for-14 from the field.

Cleveland closed the first half with a 14-4 run to lead 30-21.

A 10-foot jumper by Merlakia Jones with 4:59 to go in the half put the Rockers ahead to stay at 18-17. Jones finished with 14 points as the Rockers rebounded from a 69-65 overtime loss to Houston on Saturday in their season opener.

The Rockers are still without four players from the team that went 22-10 last season and won the Eastern Conference. Center Ann Wauters has yet to return from playing in Europe, forward Rushia Brown is out with a broken finger on her right hand and point guard Helen Darling gave birth to triplets April 13. Forward Eva Nemcova, the Rockers' career scoring leader, has not signed for her sixth WNBA season.
