CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) _ Sophia Witherspoon scored 17 points and the New York Liberty rode their second consecutive strong defensive showing of the season to a 68-57 victory over the Charlotte Sting on Saturday night.
Rookie Tamika Whitmore added 12 points and eight rebounds for New York, which harassed the Sting into 18 turnovers and converted them into 19 points.
Charlotte rookie Stephanie McCarty scored all 10 of her points in the second half, helping the Sting cut a 16-point deficit to 59-55 with 1:23 left. But New York sealed the victory at the free throw line, making nine of 12 over the last 1:15.
Vickie Johnson added 15 points for the Liberty, who had nine steals and outrebounded Charlotte 36-27.
New York lost Rebecca Lobo to a season-ending knee injury in Thursday's opener, but made up for her absence by forcing 30 Cleveland turnovers and converting them into 41 points.
Andrea Stinson led Charlotte with 15 points, while Vicky Bullett added 13 points, nine rebounds and a franchise record-tying five blocks.
Charlotte had just nine turnovers in its season-opening victory against Washington on Thursday, but the Sting matched that total by halftime Saturday night. New York converted the Sting's first-half miscues into 12 points and led by 10 at halftime.
New York scored the first six points of the second half, pushing its lead to 38-22 with 17:36 remaining.
