U.S. Jets Missing Over Scotland
Mar. 26, 2001
LONDON (AP) _ Two U.S. F-15 fighter jets were reported missing Monday over a Scottish mountain range, police said.
The aircraft, on a training flight from the U.S. air base at Lakenheath in eastern England, lost contact with ground control when they were over the Cairngorm Mountains in the Scottish Highlands, a spokeswoman for Grampian police said.
She said the U.S. Air Force had notified several police forces that the planes were overdue.
``The Cairngorm area has been mentioned, but we have had no reports of any planes coming down,'' the spokeswoman said, speaking on condition her name not be used.
Local mountain search and rescue teams were on standby.
