R&D Challenge Puts Battelle Military Scientists and Engineers to Work on Special Operators’ Challenges
May. 16, 2018
TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 16, 2018--Special operators faced with a vexing technological problem can bring that challenge to Battelle researchers attending SOFIC, who will apply their brainpower—and Battelle’s funds—to solve the problem.
The first-ever Battelle R&D Challenge will result in two different projects being provided approximately two man-months of effort by Battelle technical staff. Post-SOFIC, Battelle technical staff will continue to work with the operators, providing updates and making necessary adjustments as the technology matures into a useful solution.
“We want to hear directly from operators in the field on very specific problems they are facing and apply our expertise in ways we can solve it,” said Battelle Chief Scientist Mike Kuhlman. “Whether it’s comms, electronics, cyber or tactical gear, we’ve got years of experience developing technology to provide solutions rapidly.”
Battelle’s track record of developing need-to-have technology will be on display at the conference May 22-24 at the Tampa Bay Convention Center. Battelle’s armored non-standard commercial vehicle will be parked outside and available to select people for a test-drive. These vehicles have a reputation for being the toughest in the business, equipped to endure rigorous missions in rough terrain while providing protection to the operators.
Other technologies on display will include:HeatCoat™, a carbon nanotube-based Ice Protection System for aircraft. Caseless Telescoping Non-Lethal System, which is a point-accurate munition and launcher system developed by Battelle and licensed to Battaglia Engineering. Electronic Warfare and C4ISR including a communications technology suite.
Every day, the people of Battelle apply science and technology to solving what matters most.
