Two Given Stiff Sentence's for Child's Kidnapping
May. 24, 1995
TEMPIO PAUSANIA, Sardinia (AP) _ Two men were convicted and sentenced Wednesday to 26 years in prison for the 1992 kidnapping of a 7-year-old boy.
The boy, Farouk Kassam, identified the defendants _ Mario Asproni and Ciriaco Baldassarre Marras _ as two of his abductors.
Kidnappers held the boy in a cave in the Sardinian wilderness for six months. During the ordeal they cut off his earlobe and sent it to his family. Ransom demands fell from $9 million to $360,000.
The kidnappers released the boy when they realized police were closing in, and no ransom was ever paid.
There was speculation that the kidnappers thought the boy was related to Karim Aga Khan, who spent millions of dollars to develop the Emerald Coast resort area where the boy's family owns a hotel.
