“We are proud to recognize the hard work and achievements of our graduating class,” said Mark Christiano, head of school at Washington Virtual Academy. “It has been an honor to provide them with an educational platform that meets each of their unique needs and has set them up for future success.”
More than one third of WAVA’s seniors will graduate with honors, having maintained a 3.5 grade-point average or better throughout high school, including 29 who will graduate with high honors for maintaining a 3.75 GPA or better. Fifteen members of the Class of 2018 have completed their Associate of Arts degree through the Running Start program.
WAVA’s valedictorian, Abdullah Mohammad, has received a Presidential Scholarship to attend the University of Washington, while salutatorian Franzen Villavicencio will attend the University of Texas-Dallas on a full scholarship. Both students will deliver remarks, along with Omak School District superintendent Dr. Erik Swanson and Rick Miller, founder and CEO of Kids at Hope, an international child and youth development organization.
Collectively, members of the Class of 2018 report that they have been offered scholarships totaling more than $150,000. The graduates also report that they have been accepted to a number of colleges and universities, including Washington State University, Central Washington University, Eastern Washington University, George Fox University, Arizona State University, Cornish College of the Arts, Pierce College, Walla Wall Community College and Clover Park Technical College, among others. In addition, five students plan to enlist in the military.
WAVA students interact with each other through their virtual classrooms and build strong relationships with their classmates during their time with the school. In addition, WAVA’s active, supportive school community organizes activities where students can get together in person, and the school also offers a wide range of clubs. Graduation allows the students to celebrate their accomplishment together.
