Calls Flood Health Ministry's New AIDS Hotline
Jun. 20, 1987
ROME (AP) _ A government-run AIDS hotline that began operations Saturday reported receiving more than a call a minute from Italians worried about the incurable disease.
A panel of eight experts on AIDS manned the phone line, which was sponsered by the Italian Health Ministry. Dubbed the ''Green Telephone,'' the hotline is available to every region of Italy at a discount phone rate.
AIDS, or acquired immune deficiency syndrome, renders the body's immune system unable to resist disease.
AIDS was first identified in male homosexuals, hemophiliacs and intravenous drug abusers. The disease is most often transmitted through sexual contact.
