ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Stanford University's athletic program was ranked No. 1 by The Sporting News in an annual survey of all schools participating in both Division I football and men's basketball.

The paper graded 115 schools in four categories _ Did We Win, Did We Graduate, Did We Rock and Did We Play Fair _ covering the last 12 months.

Stanford was first in graduation; sixth in fairness, reflecting gender equity; tied for 21st in winning and 44th in Did We Rock, reflecting administrative and fan support. That produced two grades of A, a B-plus and a B-minus for an overall 3.50 on a 4.00 GPA scale.

Michigan State was second, North Carolina third, Notre Dame fourth asnd Purdue fifth.

Stanford's men's basketball team is currently ranked No. 1 in The Associated Press poll.
