ITHACA, N.Y. (AP) _ Brian Kopf and Eddie Samuel combined for 38 points, including 24 in the second half, to lead Cornell to an 82-76 win over Columbia in the Ivy League opener for both schools Saturday.
Cornell (5-6), which led 32-29 at the break, began to take charge early in the second half, going on a 16-5 run to take a 59-41 lead with 11:48 to play.
But Columbia came back with a 17-2 run over the next 4:30. Fred Johnson led the way with eight points, narrowing the gap to 61-58 with just over seven minutes remaining.
The Lions drew within 67-64 on Tony Doyle's basket with 4:36 left. But Samuel converted a driving seven-footer and a bank shot to help Cornell take a 73-65 lead with 2:54 remaining.
Columbia closed to within 76-73 on two free throws by Matt Fuchs with 47 seconds left, but DeShawn Standard made four straight free throws to ice it.
