WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) — Authorities say a hospital shuttle driver shot a man after a roadside altercation on a Delaware interstate.

The News Journal cites a Delaware State Police release that says the 28-year-old Saint Francis Life Paratransit driver saw a 53-year-old man driving an SUV pull alongside the shuttle and point what looked like a cell phone multiple times on Monday afternoon.

The unidentified men pulled over, and an altercation ensued. The SUV driver displayed a can of pepper spray, at which point the shuttle driver shot him in the upper torso. The shuttle driver then assisted with first aid and called 911.

The SUV driver was hospitalized, and the shuttle driver was taken into custody. No one else was in either vehicle at the time.

Police are conducting a first-degree assault investigation.
