Chicago City Council Approves Tax Increase of $126 Million
Dec. 17, 1987
CHICAGO (AP) _ The City Council has approved a record $2.7 billion budget for fiscal 1988, including a $126 million tax increase package.
The budget was approved late Wednesday after a five-hour conference in which City Council leaders agreed to increase property taxes by $60 million, real-estate sales and parking taxes by $20.7 million and sewer surcharges by $45.5 million.
Mayor Eugene Sawyer had wanted the property tax increase to total $66 million, but he agreed to trim $6 million as part of a compromise.
In the maneuvering at the conference, Sawyer forged an alliance with Alderman Timothy C. Evans, who had been his opponent last month in the bitter fight to succeed the late Mayor Harold Washington.
