PESARO, Italy (AP) _ Benelli, an Italian motorcycle and motor scooter manufacturer, has agreed to build a line of scooters for Renault that will bear the French automaker's name.

``We still don't know how many units will be produced in total. It's for Renault to decide according to their sales plan,'' Benelli's president, Andrea Merloni, said Friday.

Benelli will build the scooters at its Pesaro factory in central Italy, Merloni said.

Didier Marsaud, spokesman for Renault SA in Boulogne, France refused to say how much the agreement was worth and would not specify the number of vehicles Benelli will produce on behalf of Renault.

Renault will take sole charge of worldwide distribution for the scooters, which will make their appearance in the first half of 2001, said Marsaud.
