DJ Will Be Back Friday With Less Grandma, Reindeer
Dec. 19, 1985
DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) _ Disc jockey Jack Daniels will be back on the air at station WLLR Friday after promising not to play ''Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer'' over and over without permission.
Daniels was suspended indefinitely Tuesday after playing the song 27 times in less than 31/2 hours and continuing to play it after program director Ray Randall told him to stop, station manager Larry Rosmilso said.
He was allowed to return after the composer and performers of the song called in support.
Randall said Wednesday that the station had received hundreds of calls from listeners, and other stations, including Radio Ireland in Dublin and the BBC and Capitol Broadcasting in London.
''Support is 60-40 in favor of Jack,'' Randall said.
''We even had the duo who recorded the song (Elmo and Patsy) call the radio station and ask that he not be fired, along with the writer of the song.''
When Randy Brooks, composer of ''Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer'' called from Dallas, that helped clinch the decision, Randall said.
''WLLR management considering different facets of the incident decided it was not malicious in intent and there was no actual damage to the station and listeners,'' said Randall. ''Therefore, we feel the reprimand and probation is enough.''
Randall said Daniels will be on probation for 90 days and has received a reprimand in addition to the two-day suspension.
Daniels said he decided to play the song to get himself and his listeners in the Christmas spirit.
''In the future, should he want to attempt any such thing, he should clear it with me, the program director,'' Randall said.
