Poland Marks Tirolian Festival
Jun. 14, 1998
WARSAW, Poland (AP) _ Some rain on Sunday did not discourage skiers from enjoying genuine Austrian snow brought to Warsaw's Old Town as diplomatic luggage to highlight a weekend festival of Tirolian culture.
A 29-foot slope built near the Renaissance Royal Castle was covered with snow brought directly from the Otztaler glacier in the Tirol region of the Alps. Anyone can ski down it, as all necessary equipment can be rented on the spot.
When Polish customs officers requested duty and import tax on the snow, the Austrian Embassy declared it diplomatic luggage, exempt from the fees.
The festival advertises the attractions of Tirol to prospective Polish tourists.
