SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) _ Led by Warren Peebles with 19 points, Virginia Union downed Bakersfield State 69-66 in the semifinals of the NCAA Division II basketball tournament Friday night.

The first half belonged to third-ranked Virginia Union (29-3) and Peebles. The sophomore guard connected on a layup with six minutes gone to give Virginia Union an 11-7 edge, then followed with three 3-pointers, another layup and a free throw as the Panthers went on a 20-7 run over the next 10 minutes.

The Roadrunners (26-7), down 35-25 at the half, got their outside game going in the second half. Kenny Warren hit two 3-pointers and added a 3-point play to help Bakersfield get to 50-49 with 10 minutes left to play.

Virginia Union led 66-63 with 35 seconds left when Bakersfield was slapped with a technical foul for calling a timeout it didn't have.

Walter Hurd, who finished with 13 points for Virginia Union, hit one of the two free throws for the technical and Peebles later added a free throw to extend the margin to 68-63.

Tyrone Pollard's 3-pointer with 15 seconds left cut the margin to two points, and Hurd pushed it back to three with a free throw with 10 seconds left. Two Bakersfield 3-pointers failed as time expired.

Bakersfield's Beau Redstone led all scorers with 22 points.
