Martinez Makes Quarters Down Under

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) _ Top-seeded Conchita Martinez, having promised herself to stay calm on the court, beat Guilia Casoni 6-4, 6-4 Tuesday to reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Women's Hardcourt tournament.
Martinez was pushed repeatedly by her Italian opponent in this tuneup for the Australian Open. Martinez admitted she was tense throughout the match.
``I was trying hard. ... My New Year's resolution is not to get too tense and to keep my head up all of the time,'' the Spaniard said.
In other second-round matches, No. 6 Meghann Shaughnessy defeated Sandra Cacic 6-4, 6-2 in a match between Americans; Joanette Kruger of South Africa downed Christina Wheeler of Australia 6-2, 2-6, 6-4; and Andrea Glass of Germany topped Jana Kandarr of Germany 6-1, 6-2.
In the first round, No. 3 Silvija Talaja of Croatia stopped Asa Carlsson of Sweden 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 8 Justine Henin of Belgium beat Virginie Razanno of France 6-4, 6-2.
