YEREVAN, Armenia (AP) — The Armenian Defense Ministry says two of its servicemen have been killed in a border clash with a group of Azerbaijani forces.
The ministry said the incident occurred early Friday when a group of Azerbaijani soldiers attempted an incursion. Separately, the separatist Nagorno-Karabakh region's military said three Azerbaijani soldiers were killed when they tried to cross the border.
Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry, in turn, accused the Armenians of trying to cross into its territory, according to a statement carried by the Interfax news agency.
The two ex-Soviet neighbors have been locked in a conflict over Azerbaijan's Nagorno-Karabakh region, which along with some adjacent territory has been under the control of Armenian soldiers and local Armenian forces since a 1994 ceasefire that ended a six-year war. Attempts at peaceful settlement have stalled.
