Yankees Offer Strawberry a Job
Feb. 20, 2001
NEW YORK (AP) _ New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is offering Darryl Strawberry a job advising minor league players how to avoid the pitfalls of drugs and alcohol.
The New York Post said Tuesday that Strawberry would give tips on hitting, too, but his main job would be to offer his own example as a cautionary tale to young players.
``It's not about baseball, it's about real life,'' said Strawberry, who is under house arrest at a Tampa, Fla., drug treatment center.
The former Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers and Yankees slugger is undergoing chemotherapy for colon cancer and is serving out a sentence for violating his probation following a 1999 arrest for drug possession and soliciting prostitution.
``I am excited about coming back,'' Strawberry said of the job offer, which would start when he leaves rehab, possibly by this spring. ``The best thing to happen to me was a long-term treatment plan.''
