BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) _ A car swerved onto a sidewalk and smashed into a coffee shop window Monday, pinning a customer against a wall and injuring four others.

The accident happened at about 3 p.m. as The Coffee Bean was packed with customers, including police officers and firefighters.

``I thought it was an explosion of some sort until I saw the Mercedes come through the plate-glass window,'' said police Lt. Edward T. Kreins, who was standing inside the shop.

The driver told police her brakes failed and she lost control of the Mercedes-Benz, which struck newspaper racks, cars and tables before it plowed through the window.

Five people were taken to the hospital. The woman who was pinned by the car underwent leg surgery and was in serious condition. The motorist apparently was not injured.

Authorities had not decided whether to charge the driver.
