GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) _ Former Wimbledon champion Conchita Fernandez secured a semifinals berth Thursday in the Australian women's hardcourt tennis championships.

The third-seeded Spaniard, who struggled with her serve throughout the quarterfinals win over eighth-seeded Sabine Appelmans of Belgium, joined Croat Silvija Talaja in the last four at the event at the Royal Pines Resort.

Appelmans made a string unforced errors late in the match, and was beaten 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-4.
