AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) _ A Dutch man indicted in a U.S. child pornography case is already serving a 30-month sentence in the Netherlands for the same crimes, justice officials said Thursday.
The man, Dirk-Jan Prins, was convicted in May of possessing child pornography and as an accomplice in the sexual assault of a 9-year-old Danish girl.
Prins was one of 10 Europeans and 10 Americans named in an indictment by the U.S. Customs Service that was unsealed in Fresno, Calif., last Friday.
U.S. investigators allege members of the group swapped pornographic pictures and videos of children _ often their own _ over the Internet.
A spokesman for the district attorney's office in the eastern Dutch city of Dordrecht said Prins was taken into custody on Feb. 5 on a tip from Danish police and was sentenced on May 21.
According to court documents, he had about 25 CD-ROMs and 45 videotapes in his possession when arrested, including a tape of a 7-year-old boy who appeared to be drugged as he was sexually assaulted by an adult man.
The court said that while Prins wasn't physically present at the assault on the 9-year-old Danish girl, he had mailed sex implements to the girl's stepfather, Eggert Jansen. He requested photos of an assault using the implements, making him an accomplice in the case of the girl.
The Justice Department has said it will seek extradition of Prins and other Europeans accused of involvement in the ring. But a spokesman for the Dutch court where Prins was sentenced said it was unlikely Prins would be surrendered to the Americans.
``We haven't yet received an official extradition request, and I don't think it's likely that we will,'' said the district attorney's spokesman Mischa Tol. ``He's already in jail, and you can't be punished twice for the same crime.''
Prins's sentence includes a two-year probation period, during which he will undergo therapy.
In the United States, each charge of sexual exploitation of children, conspiracy to exploit children, and receiving and distributing child pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years to a maximum of 20 years.
Prins' accomplice in the assault and the victim's mother, Bente Jansen, have been charged in Denmark with sexually exploiting a child, and with receiving and distributing child pornography. Danish police also said it was unlikely that the pair would be extradited, given that the case involved Danish citizens and crimes were committed on Danish soil.
The investigation into the larger group began when the international charity Save the Children found a picture on the Internet that appeared to show a child being molested and reported it to Danish authorities.
In all, 45 children were victimized, including 37 Americans ranging in age from 2 to about 14, U.S. Customs officials said.
