Cowboys' Smith Hurts Hand
Nov. 09, 1999
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) _ Emmitt Smith, Dallas' star running back, broke a bone in his right hand Monday night and left the game after running for two touchdowns in a span of 18 seconds in the second quarter against Minnesota.
With 6:21 left in the second quarter, Smith broke loose for 63 yards and a touchdown, carrying Vikings rookie Kenny Wright on his back the last 10 yards.
Smith scored 18 seconds later on a 24-yard run after Dat Nguyen forced a fumble by David Palmer on the ensuing kickoff, apparently injuring his hand on the play.
Smith then went into the locker room for X-rays on his hand. The Cowboys said he had broken the fourth metacarpal bone in his hand.
He finished with 140 yards on 13 carries in less than a half. The second touchdown tied Marcus Allen at 145 career touchdowns, second place on the all-time list behind Jerry Rice.
