Police: Truck Driver In Fatal School Bus Crash Never Saw Stop Sign
Sep. 01, 1987
CROSS CITY, Fla. (AP) _ The driver of a truck that broadsided a school bus, killing six people, never saw the stop sign at the intersection he crossed, a Florida Highway Patrol investigator said.
Friday's accident near Bronson in north-central Florida killed five students and their bus driver and injured 17 people.
The truck driver, Scott Allen, 26, of Tampa, told police in an interview at Alachua General Hospital that he didn't see the bus ''until just before impact,'' Trooper Virgil Sandlin said Monday.
''He told me he never saw the stop sign,'' Sandlin said. ''When he saw the bus he said it was too late to use the brakes.''
The condition of Allen, who broke a leg in the accident, was not released by the hospital at his family's request. But Sandlin said Allen was in ''good condition as far as we know.''
Charges against Allen are pending, the trooper said.
