SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Police say a South Burlington high school student assaulted and attempted to rob a classmate on the school's campus.

Police say the 16-year-old victim suffered a minor cut to his hand Thursday morning and was treated on scene at the school. The Burlington Free Press reports the 17-year-old suspect voluntarily spoke with police and left the campus after the attempted robbery — so no lockdown was triggered.

Police say the investigation is still unfolding and ongoing. Both students' names are being withheld.

Deputy Police Chief Shawn Burke says the school took adequate measures to keep other students safe, limiting student and staff members' movement while police responded.

Attempts to reach officials at Rice Memorial High School were not immediately successful Thursday.
