BEIJING (AP) _ A gas explosion killed 87 miners and two rescue workers in a coal mine in eastern China, an official said today.
The blast occurred Thursday at the Pansan mine, near Huainan in Anhui province, said the official at the Central People's Broadcasting Station. He refused to give his name, but said the state-run radio station broadcast a report about the explosion today.
He said 36 miners, two of them seriously injured, were rescued from the mine.
A government team was set up after the blast to investigate the cause of the explosion, the official said.
