MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jul 30, 2018--Wolters Kluwer today announced that Fair Housing Act expert, former U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) civil rights attorney and current K&L Gates LLP partner Paul F. Hancock will be the keynote speaker for its 22 nd annual CRA & Fair Lending Colloquium being held Nov. 4-7, 2018, at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood, Fla. This year marks the 50 th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act, Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968. During his keynote, Hancock will share his experiences with this historic legislation, both as the DOJ official responsible for its enforcement and in private practice defending entities responsible for compliance.

Hancock has been deeply committed to fair housing issues for nearly five decades. During his time at the DOJ, Hancock oversaw a robust housing discrimination testing program that identified real estate agents who discriminated against minorities. Hancock also developed the DOJ’s fair lending enforcement program, which went on to receive recognition by Attorney General Janet Reno, and he filed the first-ever major race discrimination fair lending lawsuit under the Fair Housing Act. After leaving the DOJ, Hancock served as the deputy attorney general for South Florida under Bob Butterworth, most notably arguing Gore v. Bush before the Florida Supreme Court and the U.S. Supreme Court that settled a recount dispute in Florida’s 2000 U.S. presidential election.

“Passage of the Fair Housing Act represented a seismic shift in establishing and codifying fair housing rights in this country, having leveled the playing field for so many Americans, and it continues to be a significant piece of civil rights legislation,” said Timothy R. Burniston, Senior Advisor of Regulatory Strategy at Wolters Kluwer. “We are tremendously honored to have Paul F. Hancock serve as the keynote speaker for the Colloquium and look forward to his insights on advancing fair housing.”

Along with Hancock, more than 70 federal regulators, attorneys, bank compliance officers and other industry experts will speak at this year’s Colloquium. Since its inception in 1996, the Colloquium has grown to become a prominent forum for bank and credit union compliance officers, state and federal banking regulators, risk managers, consultants, vendors and other industry players seeking insights about navigating the increasingly complex regulatory and risk management challenges facing financial institutions today.

Sponsors of the 2018 Colloquium include the American Bankers Association and Independent Community Bankers of America. For more information, please visit Wolters Kluwer’s CRA & Fair Lending Colloquium website.
