Woman Throws Wedding Rings Away, Finds Them In Dump
Aug. 28, 1987
LONGWOOD, Fla. (AP) _ A woman who accidentally threw her wedding rings in the trash says she chased down a gargage truck and sifted through the city dump, finding them just in time to celebrate her 16th anniversary today.
Vickie Wilson said she took off her wedding band and solitaire to clean Sunday, wrapped them neatly in a paper towel and absent-mindedly threw it away.
The 37-year-old schoolteacher awoke Monday morning to the realization that her rings were in the garbage that had just been pick up, she said. She drove after the garbage truck, ''hysterical, I admit it.''
The sanitation workers agreed to empty the truck in an isolated area at the city landfill. Mrs. Wilson and the three garbage men from this Orlando suburb waded into compacted trash towering 10 feet above them.
''It was wet. It was sticky,'' Mrs. Wilson said. ''We were crawling in the garbage. I had garbage in my hair. I had garbage all over me, and I didn't care.''
She found her engagement ring slightly bent, the wedding band perfect. Right there at the dump, ''I slipped it back on my hand,'' she said.
''She was real lucky,'' said Al Haynes, the garbage men's supervisor. ''She was one in a thousand to get her stuff back.''
