Man Charged in Slaying of Teen in Tobago
Jul. 07, 2005
PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) _ A 22-year-old man was charged with murder Wednesday in the death of a 14-year-old American girl on the Caribbean island of Tobago.
Shawn Antoine was charged with killing Kitty Nichole Pepe, who was found Friday with stab wounds in her eye and stomach in the home she and her mother shared in the seaside village of Charlotteville.
``It was an accident,'' Antoine cried out in court.
If found guilty, Antoine faces Trinidad and Tobago's automatic death sentence for murder convictions. Antoine was not required to enter a plea, and the next hearing was set for July 14.
Police have said Antoine, a construction worker, might have been dating Pepe, a native of Keene, N.Y., who had lived in Tobago for 10 years with her mother, Heather Pepe. Heather Pepe said her daughter had refused to date Antoine.
Violent crime is rare in Tobago. Pepe was the fifth homicide victim this year on the island of about 55,000 people.
