INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Anne Thorius scored 23 points to lead Michigan past No. 24 Wisconsin 79-70 Saturday in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten women's basketball tournament.
It was Michigan's first victory in the women's tournament. The third-seeded Wolverines (19-18) play Penn State in one of Sunday's semifinals in the RCA Dome. Purdue plays top-seeded Iowa in the other semifinal.
Michigan scored seven straight points to take the lead for good, 58-52. Thorius put the Wolverines ahead 54-52 with a 3-pointer and Kenisha Walker followed with four straight points.
The Wolverines twice built 11-point leads in the final six minutes and held off the Badgers by hitting free throws in the final minutes.
LaTonya Sims led sixth-seeded Wisconsin (21-9) with 23 points, and Ann Klapperich had 16.
Wisconsin took an 8-0 lead as Michigan went scoreless for the first two minutes. The Wolverines tied it at 17 with two free throws by Ann Lemire with 9:13 left in the first half and led 35-32 at halftime.
