NEW YORK (AP) _ Afeni Shakur couldn't help but sob after watching a new play about the stormy life and death of her son, rapper Tupac Shakur.

Shakur and other family members were among those who watched the debut of ``Up Against the Wind'' Monday night at the New York Theater Workshop. The two-act play begins during Shakur's trial for sexual assault and ends after he was shot in a barrage of gunfire in 1996. No one has been arrested for his slaying.

Afeni Shakur, whose character was played by actress Hazelle Goodman, wept for several moments after the play ended, hugging those around her. Afterward, she said: ``It wiped me out.''

But she said the play, written by Michael Develle Winn, was ``wonderful.''

Shakur's sister, Sekyiwa, was the script's consultant. The play runs through mid-April.
