GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) — A western Illinois woman who was found suffering of a narcotics overdose is accused of allowing her nearly 2-year-old son to ingest drugs.
Billie Jean Cottle, 25, of Granite City faces charges of aggravated battery, reckless conduct and endangering the life of a child. She also faces prior charges of possession of controlled substances in Illinois and Missouri.
Madison County Sheriff John Lakin said a relative found Cottle unresponsive in her home Monday evening. He said it's unclear how the child ingested the drugs.
"We would hope it is the first and the last time," Lakin said.
Lakin said emergency responders used anti-narcotic treatment Narcan on the child several times before he responded. He was treated for methamphetamine and fentanyl intoxication at a nearby hospital.
He said the child will be placed in the care of Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
"This is a strong example that the opioid and drug crisis we're facing in law enforcement today reaches far beyond adults," Lakin said. "It's very disturbing for us."
The Madison County State's Attorney's Office has requested that Cottle be kept from her child and house in the event that she can make bail. Cottle remained at the Madison County Jail on a $250,000 bond Wednesday.
There's no phone listing for Cottle, and the newspaper said no one answered a knock at the residence's door.
