Booby-Trapped Car Explodes, Driver Killed
Jul. 31, 1992
BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) _ A booby-trapped car exploded in south Beirut's Shiite Muslim slum of Moallem today. Police said the driver was killed.
A police spokesman, who cannot be named in line with regulations, said the bomb went off at 7 a.m. when Hussein Safwan, a 32-year-old shoemaker, switched on his olive-green BMW.
''Death was instantaneous. No other casualties were reported and the car was badly damaged,'' the spokesman said.
No group claimed responsibility for the attack and the police spokesman said the bombing ''apparently was not politically motivated.'' He offered no other explanation.
When a booby-trapped car exploded in east Beirut's district of Nahr July 1, killing Christian contractor Pierre Sahioun, police said it could have resulted from a private dispute. There was no claim of responsibility for that attack either.
