SYDNEY, Australia (AP) _ Japanese judo star Hidehiko Yoshida was taken to the hospital after apparently breaking his right elbow in a match Wednesday, team officials said.

Yoshida, the 1999 world champion and a former Olympic gold medalist, was competing in the middleweight division against Carlos Honorato of Brazil. He was injured 43 seconds into their third-round bout.

``He appeared to break the elbow badly and may require surgery,'' said Japan team official Tsuneharu Kida.

Kida said no further details were available.

Yoshida, who won in a lighter division at the 1992 Barcelona Games, was considered one of Japan's main contenders for gold at Sydney.
