Dec. 13, 1998
MANILA, Philippines (AP) _ Tropical storm Faith headed for Vietnam Saturday after battering the central Philippines, leaving at least five people dead and forcing the evacuation nearly 10,000, disaster officials said.
Defense Secretary Orlando Mercado said three people drowned at sea in Antique and Aklan provinces, and two were crushed by a falling tree in Iloilo province. Seven people were still missing.
Nearly 10,000 people stayed in government shelters at the height of the storm, but many have returned to repair their damaged homes, officials said.
The storm caused flash floods, uprooted trees and electrical posts and left a wide swath in the central Philippines without electricity.
