Sex-assault charges dropped against Ill. doctor
Aug. 29, 2013
CARMI, Ill. (AP) — Charges have been dropped against a southern Illinois doctor who had been accused of sexually assaulting a patient.
WSIL-TV (http://bit.ly/14Gr4Ig ) reports that White County State's Attorney Denton Aud dropped the charges Wednesday, six months after a judge declared a mistrial in the case.
Dr. Jogendra Chhabra had been charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse and battery.
The mistrial came after jurors couldn't reach a verdict, and Aud says he's decided not to pursue the case further.
The alleged victim, who is from Golconda, had accused Chhabra of grabbing her head, biting her lip and fondling her during a December 2011 office visit.
Chhabra's attorney questioned whether the woman may have fabricated the encounter to get money from the doctor.
State regulators later suspended Chhabra's medical license.
