NEW YORK (AP) _ A 1,000-pound man hospitalized earlier this month after firefighter used ropes, harnesses and a hydraulic lift to get him out of his apartment, has died.

David Ron High, 43, died Tuesday at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center, said spokesman Michael Scahill. An autopsy was planned.

Earlier this month it took workers seven hours to get him out of his Brooklyn apartment for the first time in five years. Strapped to a wooden platform, High was loaded on a truck and taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Manhattan.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit Aug. 15 to be treated for renal failure, Scahill said.

High weighed about 1,000 pounds, according to his home attendant, Shakeem McCain. He was unable to walk and hadn't worked since 1990.
