Frenchman Unhurt by Thrown Bottle
Nov. 10, 1998
PARIS (AP) _ French National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen was unhurt after an assailant threw a beer bottle at his car in Paris, shattering a window, the party said Monday.
Le Pen's wife was driving their car Friday evening, which was stopped at a red light when the empty bottle hit the rear, passenger-side window, said party spokesman Alain Vizier. Le Pen's wife also was unhurt.
Le Pen wrote down the license plate number and filed a complaint with police.
The alleged assailant, who later turned himself in, was placed under investigation Saturday and was to appear before a judge, Le Parisien newspaper reported.
Police would not return calls for comment. The National Front gave no other details or comment.
Le Pen's anti-immigrant National Front has the support of about 15 percent of the French electorate. He was also convicted earlier this year of assaulting a Socialist politician at a rally.
