SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Salt Lake City high school student is in juvenile detention after allegedly bringing a gun to school Thursday.

School district spokeswoman Yándary Chatwin said that the West High School ninth-grade boy had indicated he was holding the handgun for someone else and that there was no immediate threat to the school. It's unclear who he was holding it for.

Chatwin said the gun was not loaded but the student had ammunition in another pocket.

Another student at the school found out about the gun and alerted administrators Thursday morning. Chatwin said staff calmly approached the student between classes and brought him to the front office. After that, he was taken into custody and booked into juvenile detention.

Because the student is a minor, the school district is not releasing his name.
