Two Die in Tenn. Building Collapse
Apr. 24, 1998
COWAN, Tenn. (AP) _ Two men died Friday when they were pinned under 30 tons of concrete and steel after a building collapsed on them.
The two workers were removing the steel from inside the old Market Cement Plant before demolishing it, authorities said.
Hugh Stephens, 60, of Cowan and Charlie Tinch Jr., 37, of Stevenson, Ala., died instantly.
A bulldozer driver crawled out of the wreckage with only minor injuries.
Franklin County officials are investigating what caused the building to collapse. They think the building collapsed after the bulldozer backed into a beam, according to Nashville television station WKRN.
Cowan is about 100 miles southeast of Nashville.
