ANTWERP, Belgium (AP) _ Sixth-seeded Goran Ivanisevic was upset Monday in the opening round of the $1 million European Community Championship tennis tournament.
The Croat left-hander lost 6-4, 6-3 to Jan Siemerink, a Dutchman better known for his doubles results.
U.S. Open champion Patrick Rafter, ranked third in the world, shrugged off a tough challenge before downing French qualifier Arnaud Boetsch 6-2, 7-6 (10-8).
It was a bad opening day for Belgian players on their home ground.
Dick Norman fell in a tight three-setter to American Jeff Tarango and Belgian No. 1 Filip Dewulf was upset by Czech qualifier Martin Damm.
Frenchman Guillaume Raoux won a marathon battle against Spain's Francisco Clavet 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-2, while Sweden's Magnus Larsson had no such problems. He swept past German qualifier Marc-Kevin Goellner 6-2, 6-1.
