Intelligence Officer Sentenced to Hang
Jul. 08, 1988
HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) _ A senior intelligence officer convicted of killing a motorist during a roadside argument was sentenced Friday to death by hanging.
Paul Mapurisa, 43, a senior officer in the Central Intelligence Organization, was convicted of murder for the Jan. 30, 1987 shooting of Herbert Nyamukondiwa.
The high court found that Mapurisa, who was attached to president Robert Mugabe's close security unit, fired 14 pistol shots at Nyamukondiwa, 34, in the Harare suburb of Hatfield.
The court ruled that the motorist's death had ''a keenly demoralizing effect'' on citizens who sought protection from state security officers.
