KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ The Kansas City Royals outrighted catcher Brian Johnson and right-hander Miguel Batista to Triple-A Omaha on Wednesday and recalled right-hander Doug Bochtler and catcher Jorge Fabregas, who had been sent down earlier in the season.

Johnson, recovering from knee surgery, was hitting .208 in 125 at-bats with four homers and 18 RBIs.

Batista had won just two of eight decisions and had an ERA of 7.74 since being acquired from Montreal. He had also given up 17 home runs in 57 innings as the Royals continued to lead the majors in homers allowed.

Royals manager Tony Muser said Johnson, 32, indicated he would not play in the minor leagues. He had been splitting time with Gregg Zaun until recently.

``He's been a tremendous professional,'' Muser said. ``He wanted to be the everyday guy and felt he wasn't given the opportunity. These are decisions managers have to make. Tool-wise, he didn't show me enough to be the everyday catcher.''

Bochtler will be used as Batista was _ everywhere.

``We'll use him in the middle, try to get out of innings,'' Muser said. ``We'll use him long and short. We'll use him anywhere we possibly can. He'll come in the middle, he'll set up.''
