Fujimori Names Foreign Minister
Oct. 12, 1998
LIMA, Peru (AP) _ President Alberto Fujimori named a new foreign minister Monday, giving the post to the one-time leader of Peru's delegation in peace talks with Ecuador.
Fernando de Trazegnies replaces Eduardo Ferrero, who resigned on Oct. 2.
Political leaders have alleged Ferrero resigned after Fujimori decided to take over negotiations to end a half-century-old border dispute with Ecuador.
The talks are snagged over where to draw 49 miles of unmarked border shared by Ecuador and Peru in the jungle-shrouded Cordillera del Condor region.
Ecuador and Peru have fought two wars over the disputed stretch of Andean foothills.
On Friday, Fujimori and Ecuador President Jamil Mahuad asked President Clinton to propose a solution to the deadlock. The United States, Brazil, Chile and Argentina are trying to broker a deal to end the dispute.
