Jun. 09, 1996
WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) _ The Seattle Mariner's Bobby Ayala pitched a perfect inning for the Port City Roosters Saturday night, but the inning didn't end so perfectly _ Ayala appeared to injure himself.
The reliever didn't return after the first inning in Port City's 2-1 victory over the Carolina Mudcats in a Southern League game.
Ayala was sent to Port City after a hand and wrist injury sidelined him at Seattle. In his first appearance for the Roosters, he threw 20 pitches in a 4-3 win over Knoxville on Thursday.
He was not expected to throw more than 35 pitches Saturday night. He threw only 10 before he appeared to come up limping while beating out a runner to first base to end the inning.
Team officials had no comment on Ayala's status or whether his injury was serious.
Port City eventually won the game 2-1 in the 10th inning when Jason Friedman singled home Manny Patel.
LaGrande Russell (3-5) was the winning pitcher for Port City. Manano Delossantos (2-2) took the loss for Carolina even though he gave up only one hit.
