Aug. 24, 1998
YANGON, Myanmar (AP) _ A Myanmar Airways flight carrying 39 passengers disappeared today while flying to the northern city of Tachilek, government officials said.
No further details were available.
Tachilek, 350 miles north of Yangon, straddles the border with Thailand. It is in the mountainous region of Shan State in the opium-rich Golden Triangle, the area where the borders of Myanmar, Thailand and Laos converge.
Myanmar, also known as Burma, is currently in its monsoon season although it is not known if weather played a part in the plane's disappearance.
