RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ A man who shot his son twice in the back and then claimed he did it in self-defense was executed by injection early Friday.

Zane Brown Hill, 62, who spent his last day visiting with his wife, daughter and surviving son, refused to make a final statement.

Hill had a history of terrorizing his family and was under a court order to stay away from his wife's home when he killed his son on Jan. 1, 1990. Randall Hill, 29, was shot twice in the back and once in the stomach as he called authorities.

Gov. Jim Hunt denied a clemency plea and the U.S. Supreme Court refused to stay the case Thursday.
